Detailed Vajra Symbolism
The vajra symbolism, employed as an instrument in tantric rituals, comprises a central spherical section with two symmetrical sets of five prongs, extending like lotus blooms on either side. This arrangement creates the appearance of a “diamond scepter,” reflecting the vajra’s significance. The symbolism embedded in the vajra is intricate. The central sphere symbolizes Sunyata, representing the primordial nature of the universe and the underlying unity of all things. Two eight-petaled lotus flowers emerge from the sphere, symbolizing the duality of the phenomenal world (Samsara) and the noumenal world (Nirvana).
Surrounding the lotus mouths are mythical creatures called makara, characterized as half-fish, half-crocodile beings. These makaras, often representing the union of opposites or a harmonization of qualities transcending ordinary experience, play a vital role in the vajra’s symbolism. The mouths grip strongly to compassion, or bodhicitta. The tongues emanating from the makara mouths converge to form a point, enhancing the intricate design of the vajra.
The most common form of the vajra is the five-pronged version, featuring four makara prongs and a central prong. This configuration establishes a nuanced system of correspondences between the five elements on the noumenal side and the phenomenal side of the vajra. Notably, these correspondences relate to the five “poisons,” which are mental states obscuring the purity of the mind, and the five wisdoms, representing crucial aspects of an enlightened mind. Each wisdom is associated with a Buddha figure, emphasizing the transformative journey toward enlightenment.
